1. Introduction and scope

This Privacy Policy explains how MagicKeyPen (“MagicKeyPen,” “the app,” “we,” “us”) handles information. MagicKeyPen is a native macOS application for recording software demos, walkthroughs, and tutorials, and for showing overlays during a live video call (“Live mode”). It highlights your mouse clicks and shows your keystrokes on screen so your recordings are easier to follow.

This policy covers the MagicKeyPen application itself. It does not cover any separate website, storefront, or service through which you may obtain the app, which are governed by their own policies.

2. What the app accesses, and why

To do its job, MagicKeyPen reads two kinds of information from your Mac while you are using it. Both are processed entirely on your device.

Your screen. When you record, MagicKeyPen captures the contents of your screen (using Apple’s ScreenCaptureKit) and writes it to a local video file so you can play it back and edit it.

Your mouse and keyboard input — observed only. So it can draw the click ripple and the on-screen key pill, MagicKeyPen observes your mouse clicks and positions and your keystrokes (using a macOS input event tap). This tap is listen-only: it watches your input to build a timestamped, on-device event log. It does not inject input, alter your input, or read or intercept input belonging to any other app for any other purpose.

MagicKeyPen keeps this event log of clicks and keystrokes separate from the recorded video and stores both as ordinary files on your Mac. It joins them only by timestamp, on your device, so the app can place the overlays.

3. Everything stays on your device

This is the core of how MagicKeyPen works, so we want to be plain about it:

• The recorded video (.mov files) and the event log are saved as local files on your Mac.
• None of this content is transmitted anywhere. The app has no server to send it to and makes no network requests.
• We do not collect, receive, store, analyze, sell, or share your recordings, your keystrokes, your screen contents, or any usage data.
• There are no analytics providers, no advertisers, and no third-party service that receives your data. MagicKeyPen ships with exactly one third-party component — Sparkle, used solely to check for and deliver updates to the app itself — and it never receives your recordings, your event log, or anything you type.

Because your recordings are ordinary files that you control, you decide whether to keep them, review them, share them, or delete them — just like any other file on your Mac. If you choose to share a recording (for example, by sending the video file to someone), that sharing is your action and is outside MagicKeyPen.

4. The macOS permissions MagicKeyPen uses

MagicKeyPen requests exactly two macOS system permissions. macOS itself asks you to grant these; the app cannot capture anything until you do.

1. Screen Recording — lets the app capture your screen so it can produce the recording. Without it, MagicKeyPen cannot record.
2. Input Monitoring — lets the app observe your mouse and keyboard input so it can draw the click ripple and the key pill. As described above, this observation is listen-only.

MagicKeyPen does not use the macOS Accessibility permission, and it does not request any permission beyond the two named here.

You can review or revoke either permission at any time in System Settings → Privacy & Security (under Screen Recording and Input Monitoring). If a permission is missing or revoked, MagicKeyPen will not silently capture in the background — it will not record.

5. Live mode records nothing

“Live mode” draws overlays (the click ripple and, if you turn it on, the key pill) on top of your real screen during a video call. In Live mode, no recording file is produced. There is nothing saved and nothing to leak — the overlays are drawn on screen in the moment and are gone when you stop.

6. Your control over your data

You are in control of everything MagicKeyPen touches:

• Pause keystroke capture at any time. If you are about to type something sensitive — a password, a secret, private text — you can pause keystroke capture so it is never recorded.
• Delete your files. Your recordings and event logs are ordinary local files. Delete them whenever you want, the same way you delete any file.
• Revoke permissions. Turn off Screen Recording or Input Monitoring in System Settings whenever you want; the app will stop being able to capture.
• Review before you share. Nothing is shared automatically. You decide if and when a recording leaves your Mac.

7. Children’s privacy

MagicKeyPen is a general-purpose utility and is not directed to children. Because the app does not collect any information or transmit anything off your device, it does not knowingly gather information from anyone, including children.

8. Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time — for example, if the app changes how it works. When we do, we will revise the “Effective date” above and make the updated policy available with the app. Material changes will be reflected in the app or its distribution channel. Your continued use of MagicKeyPen after an update means you accept the revised policy.
